Veteran yachtsmen heading for Australia

TWO veteran yachtsmen, Alex Whitworth, 62, and Peter Crozier, 59, are making their way on an epic voyage to Falmouth from Australia.

The two will make Falmouth their first landfall before going to the Solent and hopefully take part in this year's Fastnet Race.

The two like a challenge. In 1998, sailing the 33foot Berrimilla built in 1977, one of the smallest boats in the Sydney to Hobart fleet, they took on a savage storm that hit the race, leaving six dead and several boats sunk. They made it to the finish line, winning their division.

Last year the pair race the 2004 Sydney to Hobart and, afterwards made their way via Cape Horn, to the Falklands and on towards England.

After the Fastnet race they plan to return to Australia around the Cape of Good Hope.

This week the two yachtsmen were "looking at Newfoundland".

"Our thoughts are now very much towards Falmouth and the big to-do list we have when we get there," they said.

Simon Jinks, chief cruising instructor, Royal Yachting Association, met Alex and Peter, who comes from Britain, last year when he was teaching the Royal Yachting Association Courses in Brisbane. He said they were an amazing pair.

After taking part in the Fastnet Race they hoped to head back down under for the next Sydney-Hobart race, he said.
