Failing Poots: - computer disasters. Can mean Blue Screen of Death, or another ghastly variation
Fortune Cookie: - Alex and Corrie were sent a slip of paper from a Fortune Cookie before departure which said, “The ship is safer in the harbour but it is not meant for that”
Freckles: - two meanings. They can be a charming quirk of human skin pigment as first referred to by Corrie at the outset of the trip or something more, er, fundamental. Version Two is not unconnected with the VoA, discussed elsewhere
Franklin Expedition The Franklin Expedition
Th Franklin Expedition left London in 1845. HMS Terror and HMS Erebus set out to complete the exploration of the Arctic coastline and try to find the North West Passage. Captain John Franklin was the Expedition leader. The Expedition seemed to disappear without trace and it was several years before  the mysteries of the Expedition's tragic failure began to be resolved.

Wikipedia has a reasonable summary here:

A recommended read is Frozen in Time by Owen Beattie and John Geiger.
Look for the most recent edition, with the Margaret Atwood introduction. This has the most recent updates in forensic research.

A photograph with Pascal Lee at the site of three Expedition graves on Beechey Island is shown on the website's homepage. The Franklin Expedition was discussed in the logs of the last Berrimilla  voyage and is a subject which has always interested Alex.

Finding an empty reference page just means Alex hasn't yet referred to anything obscure beginning with that letter - he will given time
